Everlane Felted Merino Half-Zip Sweater Review

Everlane Half Zip Sweater Review

We have finally received some much needed rain and cooler temps, which means it’s officially truly sweater season. I was drawn to Everlane’s Felted Merino Half Zip Sweater with its luxurious look in photos and raving reviews. And intrigued by its use of felted wool, that is, wool that has been washed and boiled (on purpose!) for a more durable feel. I’m happy to report that it did not disappoint.

Overview

As mentioned above, the half zip sweater is made from 100% wool that has been washed and boiled. I was initially concerned about softness, as I’ve shrunk many a sweater in the past and the tell-tale sign of felting has usually been a less pliable material (sadly). However, I was glad to be wrong in this case – this sweater is very cozy and soft!

Sizing & Fit

I’m always a little unsure with the latest trend in oversized garments. Based on the stock photos and reviews, I decided to size down to XS in the Deep Camel color. For reference, I am normally an S in fitted pieces (like their classic t-shirt) and XS in more oversized items (like the ReCashmere stroopwafel sweater). I’m glad I sized down – it still has a nice slouchy silhouette without being too overwhelming on my frame. For reference, I am 5’4” and 115lb.

Style

The half-zip makes this sweater fairly versatile – I can leave the collar flat for a more casual look, or zip it up for a chillier morning. Some of the reviews mentioned that the collar can feel a bit stiff and like a neck brace if you have a shorter neck. As someone with said shorter neck, I find it to be comfortable zipped up, at least for a short period of time (read: not all day).

Additionally, the slightly flared sleeves are a nice touch. It adds a little bit of volume and more slouch, without being too much. The cuffs are a perfect size to me, snug enough to stay up on my wrists and loose enough that I can scrunch them up to my forearm if needed.

Function & Quality

This sweater is warm due to the felted wool. I can see myself wearing this in 50s F weather outside down to 40s F with a base layer.

I’ve read some reviews mentioning pilling after a few wears. I haven’t noticed this myself after about two weeks of occasional wear, but will update this review over time!

Verdict

Overall, I am a big fan of the Everlane half zip sweater. Despite my initial hesitation on material and sizing, it proved to be a solid piece! I can see myself wearing this all fall & winter both indoor and out.
